The Big Question: Electric or Gas?

It's one of the most common questions we get asked at Bespoke Fireplaces. Both electric and gas fires can look stunning and heat a room effectively, but they suit very different homes, budgets, and lifestyles. Here's everything you need to know to make the right call.

Installation

Electric Fireplaces

Electric fires are by far the simpler option to install. Most require nothing more than a standard 13 amp plug socket no gas supply, no flue, no chimney. This makes them ideal for new builds, flats, and rooms where running a gas line would be costly or impractical. They're also the go to choice for media wall installations, where a clean, flush finish is essential.

Gas Fireplaces

Gas fires require a gas supply and, depending on the type, either a flue or a balanced flue system. Installation must be carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer, which adds to the upfront cost. If you already have a chimney breast or existing gas connection, this is less of a barrier.

Running Costs

Gas is generally cheaper per kilowatt-hour than electricity in the UK, so a gas fire will typically cost less to run at full output. Flame Realism

Electric fires are essentially maintenance free. Gas fires require annual safety checks and occasional servicing of the burner and controls.

Which Should You Choose?

• Choose gas if you have an existing chimney or gas connection, want the lowest possible running cost at high output, and are happy with annual servicing.
